SAP stands for Standard Assessment Procedure and is the methodology which underpins compliance under Section 6 of the Building Standards in Scotland. SAP is the UK methodology for calculating the energy performance of dwellings.
In assessing performance the following factors are accounted for within the calculation:-
- materials used for construction of the dwelling
- thermal insulation of the building fabric
- air leakage ventilation characteristics of the dwelling, and ventilation equipment
- efficiency and control of the heating system(s)
- solar gains through openings of the dwelling
- the fuel used to provide space and water heating, ventilation and lighting
- energy for space cooling, if applicable
For compliance the method is now essentially a carbon calculation which compares target levels of performance compared to design levels. There are many other performance checks undertaken as part of the process such as minimum levels of thermal performance and appropriate levels of control.
Due to the nature of developing standards and project timescales it is necessary to be able to produce appropriate calculations and certification depending on warrant submissions and completion dates.
